I’ve been talking with Matt Miller who leads the Community Bible Chapel in Brattleboro, VT and we decided to try getting some graphics for his Christmas message. The original idea Matt was working with was “God’s mile in our shoes.” I snapped some shots of a pair of chucks and played with them in Lightroom to see if what I was visualizing was the same as what Matt was. We seemed to be heading in the same direction, so we planned to get together and shoot a bit more.
When Matt showed up to start shooting he apologetically told me that he had been rethinking his approach. He wanted more grit in the concept — the idea that God was getting His hands dirty for humanity — and he didn’t think that the shoes concept was going to communicate that as clearly.
I loved the idea, and we rethought the shoot. Unfortunately for Matt, it meant we needed someone to have grimy hands, and I was the one holding the expensive camera. It was around 20 degrees out as we walked around downtown Springfield looking for a mud puddle he could play in, but he held up like a pro.
We finished out the day with a handful of good shots. Below are all the shots (shoes and hands) that we ended up with.
